During this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of how to read and interpret spaceweather data, and how to plan and photograph the aurora borealis and Milky Way. Post processing will be covered for both aurora and milky way photos, as well as sessions on how to create star trail photos, and an introduction into batch processing and time lapse photography.
This special small group retreat of 6 participants will allow for a greater amount of one-on-one time in the educational sessions as well as in the field.
Day time landscape photography techniques will also be covered including natural light and how it affects composition, strategic aperture setting choices related to composition, the use of hdr techniques and situations where this is used, and post processing techniques in Adobe Bridge and Photoshop.
This workshop has no longer distance hiking involved longer than a mile but does have stairs and hills while carrying camera gear.
All photography skill levels are welcome.
The Garden Peninsula is steeped in a rich history of the Upper Peninsula mining and shipping. It is quite an experience to photograph the cosmos amongst the ruins and relics of a bygone era at Fayette Historic townsite, awakening the senses to spirit past and present and capturing this in photographs!
Day time excursions will include visits to lighthouses and other natural wonders in the area.
A full itinerary will be provided upon registration.
Our lodging will be in a beautifully large lodge conveniently in the Garden area near where we will be doing a lot of our night sky photography.
Registration fee covers instruction and guidance on October 1-5, 2024, and also includes lodging. Arrival/check in is 3pm on the 1st and departure is by 10am on the 5th.
We will be staying at a gorgeous private lodge in the Garden area. Each participant will have their own individual private room.
Lodging details will be provided upon workshop registration. We will be eating at local restaurants in the area.
For our night sky photography field sessions, will be photographing the magnificent dark night skies at Fayette Historic townsite (now well preserved a ghost town) in Garden, Michigan.
Our lodge where we will be staying is only 15 mins! away from this rather remote location of Fayette, which will allow us maximum opportunity to get great photographs there both day and night.
The standing ruins as well as the restored buildings of the townsite provide for endless subject matter and lend themselves well to creative night sky compositions. (refer to pics on this page for reference).
There are wonderful night sky opportunities in all directions here for both creative aurora photos facing north should the aurora occur, as well as Milky Way with the core setting in the SW this time of year.
We will be using low level lighting to illuminate our photographs. Hopefully we will get a favorable aurora forecast and have a chance to photograph the ever-elusive northern lights as well. Nights are getting longer, and we will be able to get started much earlier with the night sky field sessions than in summer months.
Early October is prime for the odds of seeing the aurora; I have witnessed some of the strongest events during this time.
We will be visiting lighthouses and other scenic locations for great photographs at during the day. There should be an abundance of autumn color this time of year and we may also take a scenic drive on
Hwy NF 13 through the Hiawatha National Forest and stop at a couple lakes should the foliage be popping with color.
A complete itinerary will be sent out upon registration.
